Operation Overlord was the codename for the Invasion of Europe in France. The operation commenced on June 6, 1944 with the Normandy Landings (codenamed Operation Neptune [invasion phase], commonly known as D-Day).
The operation launched the invasion of German-occupied Western Europe during World War II by the Western Allies.
