The M19 Mobile Air Defense Unit was a step further in anti-aircraft firepower. The M19 had dual mounted Bofors 40mm guns that could engage multiple targets. The armor of the M19 meant it could resist tremendous damage, enough to knock out a medium tank. The M19 replaces the M16 in the anti-aircraft duty. Comes at a price but its worth it.
History[]
Standardized in June 1944, the M19 Twin 40mm Gun Motor Carriage was an obvious upgrade over the combat proven M15 and M16 halftrack series. The M19 full-track carriage featured two turret-mounted 40mm Bofors guns on an M24 Chaffee light tank chassis. The first M19 units were not accepted by the Army until the war in Europe was all but over, so the carriage did not see significant employment until the postwar years and the conflict in Korea. Although developed during World War II, the M19 is best considered a postwar weapon.
Strategies and Tactics[]
- If around ten of these and ten to twenty heavy or super-heavy tanks are made, they can be virtually unstoppable - except to a massive rush of enemy fighter-bombers or ambush in a town by heavy infantry.
- Upgrading to the M19 is advisable from as early on as it is possible; the M16 is very fragile and does not inflict too much damage on enemy aircraft.
Pros & Cons[]
+Same speed as the M16 but more firepower, nice armor and the ability to attack armor and buildings.
+the only disadvantage compared to the M16 is the higher price, lower efficiency/currency, lower dps against infantry (still high) and attacking ground targets from about 200m rather than 250m.
-The development is expensive.
-Although equiped with twin Bofors L/60, it's below the standard of wierbelwind and other SPAAGs.
